Orion’s belt

Orion’s belt in the southern sky
With the southern cross conjunct
A south ward star to steer her by
The liner of the sky at night
Skims clouds, of shadowed mist
The deep dark sea as background fill
A deeper black than the night sky.

Dawn brings a moments flash of gold
Gilding the edges of ultramarine
An hour later soft haze hides the horizon
Beneath a wide brown land lies hidden
Under an endless sky of palest blue
The half-moon long set, the stars
Just faded dreams of home.
